The bike fit process

After starting 3D Motion (and optionally signing in, if you haven’t signed in recently), the Step 1 is to enter details for your rider.

Entering rider details
Entering rider details
  • The client name, email and bike brand/model are used on the report at the end of the fit process.
  • The options in “Position for fit” are set by the system. Your choice here will dictate the position of measurement points, and which body metrics are displayed for the rider.
  • The choice of Fitters is based on what you have entered in Settings. See 'Software Setup' for more information on this.

When you have set the rider details, the next step is to drag the handles of the selection area on the liveview to shrink the capture area to just include the bike horizontally with space for the rider vertically.

Then click “Next” to go to the capture screen.

Step 2: Capturing data

The main enhancement of V2 over V1 comes on the capture screen, where we’ve added automatic video recording and instant replay. While not capturing the data will display a 3s rolling average. This freeform data allows you to work on technique elements and explain to the rider.

This video shows the position capture process:

The capture process is explained in more detail below.

Step 2: Capture screen
Step 2: Capture screen

Note that the left-hand side of the screen now has a list of “Capture sources”. You can click on any of these sources to select a primary source. The video saved during a capture will be this primary source - so you can save a frontal video (or a knee track video) by running a capture with that view selected.

To begin a capture, make sure the rider is pedalling at a realistic cadence then press “Start Capture”

This will begin a countdown to initiate data acquisition (no data will be visible at this time).

After the stabilisation the system will start displaying data while it continues capturing.

Once the acquisition period is complete you have the option to save or discard (if the rider was inconsistent) the capture.

You can enter comments during the acquisition or just prior to saving. If you forget to comment before saving you can still alter the comment later.

Once saved a thumbnail will appear in the history column to the right.

Hovering on a thumbnail will instantly replay the captured video in the liveview and give you options to “Review” and “Compare” - note that if you have selected the view from a webcam that is the video that will be saved.

Clicking on “Review” will bring up the summary data just for that capture. You can edit the fitter comment here if needed.

Clicking on “Compare” will bring up a comparison of the chosen capture to the most recent one. So you can compare the previous position or the first to the current.

Clicking on the “Relative” tickbox at bottom left will show the most recent as differences from the earlier capture.

(This example is from a reply file so there are no differences.) This function is intended to help you quickly evaluate changes.

You can perform as many captures and bike measurements as you wish. The data for each will be saved to the fit folder. Only the Initial and Final data will be shown in the report.

Final bike measure

Once you have arrived at a position that fits within the ranges and both you and the customer are satisfied, you must remeasure the bike.

For the first bike measurement, you need to capture all measurement points. For subsequent measures, you can recapture only the points that have changed, as in the video below. (Note that if the bike has moved relative to the camera, you will need to recapture all points).

Once you’ve completed the fit, click Next to progress from the capture screen to the report screen.

Step 3: Report

Step 3: Report screen

Write your summary comment in the ‘Fitter Comment’ box. Periodically, the report preview will update with your changes.

Clicking on “Open Folder” will take you to all the the recorded data for that fit, including snapshot images, video captures, and the generated report. The folder will be named as “date name (position)”.

You will see the report saved there with the riders name and position style in the filename. There is also an image and video for every capture as well as the ‘fit log’ which records the angles and measurements of each capture if you wish to access data from the intermediate steps in the fit.

Going up one folder level in Explorer gives you a list of all the fit folders. (The location of this folder can be changed in the Settings window - we recommend that you use a file sync service like Dropbox to backup and share your fits with clients)

This folder also contains a ‘Fit index’ which is an automatically generated list of the fits you have performed. You may add extra columns (e.g. a comments column) to the file, as long as you do not alter the first six columns.
